Serbia, one river bend at a time.
Which Iron Gates boat actually pulls in under Golubac. Where the rakija is distilled instead of bought. Whether the Šargan Eight is worth the early start. Tours across Serbia, reviewed.

The corners of Serbia a trip gets built around.
Belgrade on its two rivers, the Danube where it narrows to a gorge, the baroque lanes of Sremski Karlovci, the wooden villages of the west, the long tables of the south. Pick the ones your days can carry.
Belgrade opens from the water, the street and the tunnel.

A fortress on the point where the Sava runs into the Danube, Roman and Ottoman layers underneath it, and the sunset boats that leave from below. These three carry the most travellers; the full list splits the rest by how you like to move.

Kalemegdan, Knez Mihailova, Skadarlija
Start at the confluence terrace, walk the pedestrian spine down to Terazije, finish under the lanterns of the old cobbled restaurant street.
The Danube gets narrow, and Serbia gets dramatic.
Two hours east of Belgrade the river squeezes between cliffs into the Iron Gates, past the walls of Golubac and the rock face carved with the head of Decebalus. It is the longest, best day trip in the country.
Novi Sad keeps the Habsburg half of Serbia.
An hour north, the plain flattens out and the architecture changes: yellow baroque, a star fortress with a clock whose hands run backwards, and the Fruška Gora ridge behind it, stacked with monasteries and cellars of bermet wine.

Western Serbia is the country at its most photographed: a lone house on a rock in the middle of the Drina, the Tara canyon dropping away at Banjska Stena, Kusturica’s timber village on the ridge, and a narrow-gauge train that loops back over itself to get down the hill.

What a day out in Serbia costs.
Every tour on the site, by price. A walking tour costs less than lunch; a private car for a whole valley costs what it sounds like.
Walking tours, fortress tunnels, rakija and wine tastings, the city by bike or scooter.
The standard day out: Novi Sad and Karlovci, the eastern caves and monasteries, food tours with the tastings included.
What Serbia keeps to itself.
River gorges and hilltop monasteries run the length of the Balkans. A railway that writes a figure eight into a mountainside, a plum brandy measured out by the household, and the concrete decades of Yugoslavia belong to Serbia.

The Šargan Eight
To drop 300 metres off the Šargan pass, the old Belgrade to Sarajevo line writes a figure eight into the hillside: 13.5 kilometres of track, 22 tunnels, and the same valley three times from three heights. It closed in 1974 and was relaid as a heritage railway. Trains run spring to autumn and the round trip takes about two and a half hours.

Rakija, at the source
Rakija is distilled at home in Serbia long before it reaches a bar, and the plum version, šljivovica, is the one a household measures its year by. A tasting works through quince, apricot and the herb-steeped travarica, poured into small ribbed glasses and never hurried.

Yugoslav Belgrade
New Belgrade was drained and built across the Sava from the late 1940s, and its blocks, its boulevards and the old tram routes still set the shape of the city. These tours cover the Yugoslav period, the architecture it left behind, and the house on Dedinje where Tito is buried.

When the košava blows, Belgrade goes indoors.
The košava comes up the Danube from the southeast in autumn and winter, and it is a wind you plan a day around. Every good answer is under a roof: the tunnels and gunpowder magazine inside the fortress, an oak cellar in Sremski Karlovci, a distillery bench, a lunch that runs to four courses.
